Teen Outreach Program
Teen Outreach Program (T.O.P.) is a club at Sturgeon High School that focuses on empowering teens with the skills they need to avoid risky behaviors and develop into healthy, thriving adults. This group meets during the school day every Tuesday.
Along with Strong Teens, Sturgeon High has also implemented The SOAR Program for high school 9th and 10th graders. The SOAR® Learning & Soft Skills Curriculum (aka SOAR Study Skills Curriculum) teaches the most critical learning, organizing, and communication skills needed to be successful in school and in the workplace. Those skills include:
- Identify students' strengths & “SuperPowers” (according to Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences)
- Set goals
- Establish priorities
- Manage time
- Organize papers, desks, lockers, & other space
- Speak & listen effectively
- Work with teachers & peers
- Read and understand textbooks
- Take notes
- Study for tests
- Write research papers
- Prepare for presentations
- Track long-term goals
This year, Sturgeon High School has decided to implement a program called Strong Teens once a week during Seminar. Strong Teens is taught through engaging, thought-provoking classroom activities, allowing students to explore their feelings and learn social-emotional skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives. Other topics include managing anger, reducing stress, solving interpersonal problems, and much more. We will be running this program for part of the year.
